The story is about a divorced mother and former high school "mean girl," played by Leslie Bibb of "Iron Man" and "Popular" fame, who moves back to her old neighborhood in Dallas. Her old friends, led by Chenoweth's character, a housewife, appear to be hell-bent on ruining her reputation. Spokespeople for Bibbs and Chenoweth confirmed the actresses' participation in the pilot, which is based on a book by Kim Gatlin. A source close to the matter told OnTheRedCarpet.com that the name of the pilot is likely to change as it is still in an early stage of development.
The on-air project was of "Sex and the City" and "Melrose Place" fame, according to Deadline.com. The Parents Television Council, a watchdog group that monitors programs for possible profanity and other things they deem inappropriate for young viewers, said the tentative title of the ABC pilot was "offensive."
"ABC's decision is not only an affront to women, it blatantly attacks the world's largest faith," the group's president Tim Winter said in a statement. "The 'B-word' is toxic and is used to degrade, abuse, harass, bully and humiliate women. And the 'Christian' element only adds insult to injury."
"Unless or until ABC realizes that its decision about 'Good Christian Bitches' was misguided, PTC will use every method at its disposal to turn advertisers and viewers away from a provocative title that compromises respect for both women and Christians in an attempt to draw ratings," Winter added.
ABC had no immediate response to Winters' remarks. The Parents Television Council last year condemned a racy GQ magazine photoshoot featuring three "Glee" cast members as well as the title of the CBS comedy series "$#*! My Dad Says."
Chenoweth had said in January that she was working on a pilot with "Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy, telling OnTheRedCarpet.com: "It's really a good idea and it will obviously involve singing and dancing. It'll be geared a little bit more towards older fans, not old people, although I hope old people watch it - that would be me, old people."
The actress' spokesperson told OnTheRedCarpet.com that the Murphy project "doesn't have a set timeline and wasn't planned for this season," but that "it is still a possibility for the future."
Chenoweth originated the role of Glinda the Good Witch in the Broadway musical "Wicked" and also appeared on the ABC series "Pushing Daisies, which ran between 2007 and 2009. She is set to reprise her role as April Rhodes on "Glee" later this spring.
In April, the gay rights organization GLAAD is set to honor Chenoweth with the Vanguard Award, which is presented to "media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community."
